Tuesday September 25th

Leave Tbilisi and visit Mtskheta  – the ancient capital of Georgia. I quickly sketch Dzhvari Church, visited by Lermontov, before we go on to the cathedral of Sveti-Tskhoveli – a particularly sacred site as legend has it that Christ’s robe is buried there. In a very different spirit we drive to Gori, Stalin’s birthplace, where we are shown round the Stalin museum. Stalin’s green (and very luxurious) train carriage is in the grounds. End up in Kutaisi where there has been another mix up over the rooms. The couples are all led off to a ‘de-luxe’ hotel and the ‘singles’ have to make do with a rather basic hotel.
